Our Identity Statement
The identity statement of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) states: “We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.”
All are welcome to the Lord’s Table for the sake of mission and for the sake of the world as the one family of God. Most congregations do this by celebrating communion every Sunday. That’s why we use a chalice as our logo.
We are passionate about experiencing our faith today through our relationship to God and neighbor. Even more, we are excited to pass along the faith to the next generation - your children and ours! God has blessed us with a diverse gathering of people who bring their questions and reflections. As a historic congregation in Edwardsville, we strive for a balance of ministry to engage participants for a lifetime. Sundays you will find us sharing music filled worship with great sermons and warm fellowship. We share Communion every Sunday and it is open to anyone regardless of membership. Beyond Sunday, you can choose from a growing youth ministry, to meaningful service projects, to insightful study and small group options. We are blessed to be church and want to share this joy with you!

Who is the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
Obviously the best way to get to know what we believe is to experience it firsthand, but here’s a few high level points. Like most Christians, Disciples affirm that: Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God and offers saving grace to all; and that all people are God’s children. What does our church believe?
Our congregation is a member of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). While founded on American soil in the early 1800s, our tradition is uniquely equipped to live up to its identity that it is a "movement for wholeness in a fragmented world." The denomination continues to be influenced by its founding ideals of our unity in Christ with openness and diversity in practice and belief.
We celebrate Communion (Lord’s Supper) weekly and believe that all are invited to participate regardless of membership. We prefer to baptize by immersion those who make the choice, though we affirm all baptisms regardless of method. We encourage each individual to read and interpret the Bible, bringing their insight and faith into dialogue with the community of faith.

Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Jesus said, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:36-40)
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20)
The church is identified with the Protestant “mainstream” and is widely involved in social and other concerns. Disciples have vigorously supported world and national programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the developmentally disabled, and aid to victims of war and calamity.
What should I expect if I attend a worship service?
Expect to feel welcome and wanted at FCCE. We pride ourselves in nurturing an inviting and fun atmosphere. Our aim is to encourage each person to participate in ways that are comfortable for him/her. You may find many similarities to other church services that you’ve attended in the past. Above all, your traditions are honored and diversity is welcomed.
How long are your services?
Each church service is typically about an hour long. It all depends on the preaching and music! We don't shy away from the time needed to get the message and praise proclaimed!
Is it OK to bring my children into the worship service?
Yes, it is! Or if you crave a little “alone” time during the service, a nursery is available for infants though pre-kindergarten kids.
May I participate in Communion?
Yes! We celebrate an open table -- all who believe in Christ are welcomed to partake in the Communion celebration. No matter who you are, where you are from, or what you’ve done, each Sunday we offer the Lord’s Supper and welcome all to share.
What do I wear?
The focus is definitely NOT on what you wear. You’ll see participants in everything from jeans to business casual to their “Sunday best.”
Where do I go once I get there?
Parking is available on both sides and at the rear of the church property. Most enter through two entrances, one on the east side of the church from the portico into the Narthex (lobby) of the Sanctuary; the other entrance at the rear of the building is closer to our Fellowship Hall where we gather between services. Either way, it is all on the same hallway!
How do I join?
If you are interested in joining the church, talk to the minister before or after worship, call or email the church office. We’ll contact you to work out the details.
Who can serve?
Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service and spiritual growth so you’ll see a variety of faces participating in our services. Men, women, old, and young are all encouraged to join.
Will I be asked to give money?
First Christian is supported by the voluntary financial contributions of its members and friends. We ask those who attend to give offerings only as they feel comfortable.
What if I haven’t been to church in a while (or ever)?
